Dress Code Policy

PURPOSE

We recognize and respect that deciding how to dress for our meetings and events is a personal decision.  But we also ask that you recognize and respect that the dress choices you make affect not just your own comfort, but that of your fellow club members, the environment of the meeting or event, and the image the club is trying to convey to the people around us.  To that end, we require that our members adhere to the following policy.

APPROPRIATE ATTIRE

Club members must dress in attire appropriate to be out in public while attending meetings or events.  Clothing must be clean and in good repair.  Club members are to dress in the following way while working an event or attending a meeting:

  • Club shirt - this is always preferred at ALL events.

  • If you do not own a club shirt, a sci-fi or fantasy themed shirt is a suitable replacement.

  • Long pants and shorts are both acceptable.  Shorts must be of an appropriate length. (Short shorts are not acceptable).

  • Shoewear is left to personal choice except in the case of specific events/venues with their own restrictions.

INAPPROPRIATE ATTIRE

These items are not considered appropriate for club members and should not be worn to meetings or events, and it includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Plain t-shirts, shirts depicting graphics not related to Sci-Fi or Fantasy, as well as shirts with language or graphics that are, or may be considered, vulgar, sexually explicit, or otherwise offensive.

  • Cutoffs, cut up clothing, or clothes that are tattered.

  • Halter tops, tube tops, sports bras, midriff length tops, see-thru blouses/shirts, or similar attire.

  • Provocative attire, including miniskirts, short shorts, spandex/lycra or any other skin-tight clothing, and clothing that is too revealing.

  • Visible under-clothing (this is strictly enforced during events that the club attends).

  • Offensive or vulgar tattoos MUST be covered up while working an event (this is also strictly enforced).

EVENT NOTES

While the above it standard club policy, please note that the dress code may have to be adjusted depending on the nature of the event, the venue where the event is held, or the group sponsoring the event.  In this case, club members will be advised of the requirements prior to the event and expected to comply in order to participate.

ENFORCEMENT

This dress code will be monitored and enforced, particularly during an event that the club participates in.  Remember that we are trying to convey an image to the public, and our attire will directly affect this image.  If a club member is in violation of this code, the club leaders will speak with them and do their best to explain where the infraction occurred.  The member will be asked to change their attire to something appropriate.  In the event that the violation is a shirt or top, the club leaders will offer a club shirt IF there is an extra one available.  If the member refuses to comply, and it is at an event, they will be removed as participating with the club for that specific event.

REQUESTS FOR ACCOMMODATIONS

The club will enforce the dress code consistently, but in a way that respects the personal circumstances of each member, including his/her race, religion, gender, physical/mental condition, nationality, family status, etc.  Members may request exemptions or accommodations to this dress code on these and other grounds by asking their club leaders.  All requests for accommodations will be seriously considered based on the particular circumstances involved.

WHERE TO GO IF YOU HAVE QUESTIONS

If you have questions about this dress code and what you’re expected to do to comply with it, please don’t hesitate to ask your club leaders.
